SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel

SkinMedica (an Allergan company) is a professional dermatology brand that is best known for its prestigious TNS Essential Serum and Lytera® 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum.

The SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel is another product from its professional portfolio that helps reduce the appearance of red or pink scars following medical or cosmetic procedures.

Personally, I have not tried this product because: i) I haven't had surgery and ii) it's pretty expensive.

This scar gel is marketed towards patients undergoing aesthetic procedures like plastic surgery, breast enlargement/reduction, and laser resurfacing; as well as medical operations like C-section.

SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel Review 2

Unlike my previous recommendations, the Scar Recovery Gel does not use silicone, but relies on a proprietary blend with Centelline®, a complex of three key ingredients:

  • Centella Asiatica: a plant found in parts of Asia commonly known as Indian Pennywort. Research shows that it contains active compounds like madecassoside which may help improve small wounds, burns, and psoriasis, and soften hypertrophic scars and keloids (source: Centella Asiatica in Cosmetology, 2013).
  • Bulbine Frutescens: a flowering plant in Southern Africa that is used in traditional medicine. Researchers discovered that the gel from the leaves of this plant helps promote increased collagen formation and deposition. This supports its use for burns and skin wounds (source: Bulbine Natalensis and Bulbine Frutescens Promote Cutaneous Wound Healing, 2012).
  • Oleuropein: a chemical compound found in the skin, flesh, and seeds of green olives. Research shows that this olive leaf extract accelerates wound healing based on a study of 24 mice. (source: Evaluation of Effect of Oleuropein on Skin Wound Healing..., 2014).

SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel is available in both 0.5 oz and 2.0 oz formats.

My Verdict: If you're planning to undergo medical or cosmetic surgery, Scar Recovery Gel can help reduce the appearance of subsequent scarring and promote better recovery results.
