Finding the right moisturizer is crucial when you have eczema or psoriasis. As a skincare editor with sensitive skin, two products I often recommend are Vanicream Moisturizing Cream and Aveeno Eczema Therapy Nighttime Itch Relief Balm. Both can calm and relieve dryness, but also have key differences.

Main Ingredients

Vanicream uses gentle emollients like petrolatum, dimethicone, and glycerin to hydrate without irritating. Aveeno relies on colloidal oatmeal plus soothing feverfew and conditioning ceramides.

Skin Soothing Abilities

Both products are fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and clinically shown to reduce dryness and irritation. However, Aveeno's oat extracts and feverfew seem to provide an extra anti-itch calming effect.

In my experience, both products can help minimize flaking and redness. But Aveeno’s feverfew extract may work better to immediately reduce painful itching and inflammation when eczema or psoriasis flares up.

Texture and Feel

Vanicream has a richer, thicker texture ideal for very dry areas. Aveeno feels more lightweight yet still moisturizes deeply with protective oils that absorb faster.

Oil Control

Neither cream is greasy but Vanicream leaves more of an emollient film on the skin. This makes it excellent for overnight relief. Aveeno works better under makeup as a daytime option.

Suitable Skin Types

Vanicream is ideal for severely dry, cracking skin needing dense hydration. Aveeno’s lighter formulas specially benefit sensitive, easily irritated eczema and psoriasis-prone skin.

Price

Vanicream is more affordable at $12 for 16oz while Aveeno costs around $14 for just 2oz. So Vanicream provides far more product for a much lower price overall.

The Bottom Line

For those needing an affordable, fragrance-free moisturizer, Vanicream is a great option. But for targeted eczema and psoriasis relief, I would recommend Aveeno with colloidal oatmeal and anti-itch feverfew. However, always patch test before fully switching products when you have sensitive skin!
