Having a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis means being careful which products you use. As an editor with sensitive skin, two lotions I often recommend are e45 Moisturizing Lotion and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion. Both can calm and relieve dryness, but also have key differences.
The e45 lotion contains petrolatum and glycerin to lock in moisture along with antioxidants like vitamin E. Aveeno relies on colloidal oatmeal to soothe inflammation and nourish skin.
Both products are fragrance-free and clinically proven to improve dryness and irritation. However, Aveeno’s colloidal oatmeal has an extra calming effect that helps reduce eczema flares and sensitivity.
The rich texture of e45 provides long-lasting hydration by forming an occlusive barrier on the skin. Aveeno also hydrates thanks to moisturizing oils in oatmeal but absorbs faster.
e45 has a thicker, greasier feel that works well for overnight relief of severely dry areas. Aveeno absorbs quickly as a lighter lotion suitable for daytime wear under makeup or sunscreen.
e45 intensely hydrates but may feel too heavy for some. Aveeno soothes gently but those with severe cracks and fissures may need more occlusion.
e45 Intense Moisture works well for severely dry, flaking skin needing deep hydration. Aveeno’s formulas specially benefit eczema, psoriasis and easily irritated skin.
At around $8-$12 USD per bottle, e45 and Aveeno are competitively priced with similar body lotions. Aveeno is occasionally pricier but often goes on sale.
Those with mild dryness or sensitivity may find either brand effectively soothing and hydrating. But for more severe eczema, psoriasis and irritated skin, I typically recommend fragrance-free Aveeno with colloidal oatmeal. However, be sure to patch test before fully switching products. Finding the right lotion takes trial and error!
