Scarguard Review

If you have scars from a recent injury or surgery, using a silicone-based product like ScarGuard can significantly improve your scar appearance and prevent new scar formation.

Medical professionals, such as dermatologists and plastic surgeons, have long been using silicone for scar treatment since the 1980s. (1)

ScarGuard is different from most silicone gels. It’s actually a liquid formula that dries on your skin to form an instant silicone sheet.

I call it the “tide to go” of silicone sheets.

This makes ScarGuard perfect for scars that require mobility (such as knees and elbows), in hard-to-reach places (back and shoulders), and where traditional silicone strips are impractical (such as on your face, neck, and hands).

However, ScarGuard has a few drawbacks, such as the little white flakes it leaves everywhere, its strong odor, and natural liquid evaporation.

Overall, ScarGuard is an excellent scar product with outstanding reviews. But at current prices, I’d rather spend a few bucks more on a high quality silicone gel like NewGel+ (which is just as effective but much easier to use with no issues like flakiness or unpleasant smells).

What Is ScarGuard?

ScarGuard is a unique scar repair liquid that’s formulated to minimize your surgery scars for the most aesthetic post-op recovery outcome.

Featuring 12% silicone, ScarGuard dries almost instantly to form an invisible silicone sheet.

It’s perfect for scars that require more mobility (such as knees and elbows), are hard-to-reach (like your back and shoulders), or where traditional silicone sheets are impractical to use (such as on your face, neck, and hands).

The formula also includes 0.5% hydrocortisone to relieve signs of itchiness and discomfort as well as vitamin E for added skin hydration.

While ScarGuard works extremely well on scars (as shown by outstanding customer reviews), it’s not without a couple of drawbacks.

For starters, you (or your significant other) will be constantly cleaning up these little white flakes left everywhere (these are actually small pieces of dried silicone that have fallen off your skin).

Also, ScarGuard has a very strong smell (like nail polish) but this goes away in a few minutes.

Finally, keep in mind that the liquid will naturally evaporate over time as it’s exposed to air. So make sure to use the included red stopper to keep the bottle sealed tight after each use.

Overall, ScarGuard is an excellent product for minimizing new scars and shrinking old scars.

But given its drawbacks, I’d recommend using a high quality silicone gel like NewGel+ instead.

Silicone gels are just as effective but don’t have issues like flakiness, odors, or evaporation.

How Does ScarGuard Work?

Man Applying Silicone Gel

According to the company, ScarGuard’s unique liquid formula helps activate enzymes in your body called collagenase. (2)

Essentially, the role of collagenase is to break up collagen fibers. This is useful as abnormal scar tissue, like hypertrophic scars and keloids, contains excessive levels of collagen. (3)

As a result, ScarGuard reduces scar thickness and improves the appearance of your scars to blend in more with the rest of your skin.

ScarGuard also contains hydrocortisone, a common ingredient used to relieve itchiness and discomfort, as well as swelling and redness associated with injuries and post-op wounds.

ScarGuard Reviews

Woman Applying Scar Cream

“Improves texture, appearance, color in a way that normal healing cannot…”

“Recommend this to anyone who has gotten a scar to help its appearance. How this worked for me was that it minimized the red pigmentation that my scar left behind extremely quickly and improved the texture and appearance in a way that simply leaving the scar alone wouldn’t have. Maybe the best way to describe it is to say that it helps scar tissue blend in with normal skin in texture and appearance. I have recommended this to many friends and all of them agree that it helped minimize the appearance and hyperpigmentation.”

Jacqueline

“What a rip off…”

“This product goes on as a liquid and it turns into a white thin layer which cracks off as you get dressed. It flakes off and falls to the ground everywhere. I looked like a person with eczema. After 2 weeks of constant use it did not help at all.”

Alex Q.

“It’s Working!”

“I purchased the 0.5oz bottle. This is a clear liquid that smells like nail polish, and the goal is to apply a thin layer over your scars. The instructions say to apply twice a day, and to reapply when peeling. It takes about 20 seconds to dry after application, and also for the smell to dissipate, and I notice for me it starts to peel after a couple of hours- which is annoying BUT after a week, I noticed that my scars did actually start to flatten out. Others also commented that my scars have started to look better.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I start using ScarGuard?

You can start using ScarGuard immediately on existing hypertrophic scars and keloids.

For new scars, wait until the scab has fallen off before using ScarGuard. For surgery scars, wait until stitches or staples have been removed and the wound has fully closed.

How do I apply ScarGuard?

First, cleanse your skin and complete your normal skincare routine. Since ScarGuard will form a silicone sheet layer, it should be the last step in your regimen.

Next, use the brush applicator or a cotton swab to carefully apply a thin layer over your scars and make sure to cover the edges as well.

Finally, let the liquid dry for up to one minute before wearing clothes.

How long should I use ScarGuard?

It’s recommended to use ScarGuard for at least 3-6 months or until you no longer see any further scar improvements.

How do I remove ScarGuard?

When I was using ScarGuard, I exfoliated my skin every night to get rid of the silicone film. Now, I realized there’s an easier way to remove ScarGuard.

Simply apply a bit of scotch tape at night to peel off as much as you can without pulling on your skin. You don’t want to disrupt the healing process that is taking place beneath the surface.

What is the difference between ScarGuard and ScarGuard MD?

ScarGuard and ScarGuard MD are the same product made by Scarguard Labs. In 2017, the company rebranded ScarGuard MD to simply “ScarGuard” with a new design and packaging.

It can be confusing because you can find both products available for sale on Amazon.

My Verdict on ScarGuard

I hope you enjoyed my ScarGuard review.

It’s an excellent scar repair liquid with outstanding reviews at an affordable price.

Given some of its drawbacks, I personally prefer to use a silicone gel like NewGel+ which is just as effective and much easier to use.
