Mederma is a popular brand of over-the-counter scar treatments. According to Pharmacy Times, it’s been the #1 pharmacist recommended brand for 15 years!

The main ingredient in all Mederma products is Cepalin (onion extract). This may help soften scar tissue and reduce skin discoloration. However, medical research on onion extract is still limited.

In addition to Cepalin, Mederma PM also contains Tripeptol, a complex of “peptides, collagen, and antioxidants to promote healthy-looking skin and fight free-radical damage.”

The other advantage of Mederma PM is that it’s designed to work while you sleep. Skin-healing ingredients like copper peptides, vitamin E, and hydrolyzed collagen help promote cell regeneration and skin repair.

Mederma PM is available at most pharmacies and retailers, including Amazon where it has over 800 reviews

What Makes Mederma PM Different?

Mederma PM has a number of unique features:

  • It’s been the #1 pharmacist recommended brand for 15 years
  • The active ingredient is Cepalin (onion extract)
  • Mederma PM also contains Tripeptol Complex
  • It’s designed to work while you sleep

#1 Pharmacist Recommended Brand

According to Pharmacy Times, Mederma has been the #1 pharmacist recommended brand for scar treatment for 15 years!

Pharmacy Times conducts a national survey every year of over 3,000 pharmacists.

Cepalin (Onion Extract)

The active ingredient in Mederma is Cepalin (onion extract).

Cepalin may help reduce inflammation and soften scar tissue. This can improve the size, texture, and color of your scars.

Tripeptol Complex

Mederma PM includes Tripeptol, a complex of skin-healing ingredients including:

  • Copper Peptide: may promote wound healing
  • Vitamin E: an antioxidant that protects the skin from free radical damage
  • Hydrolyzed Collagen: building blocks of longer-chain collagen molecules

Mederma PM also includes excellent skin hydrators like glycerin, aloe vera, and panthenol.

Works While You Sleep

Mederma PM is designed to work while you sleep. That’s because our body does most of its regeneration and cell repair during the night. This means you only need to apply the cream once a day.

However, similar to our findings for Mederma Advanced Scar Gel, we recommend using Mederma PM 2x a day because:

  • Many customers achieved better results by using the product 2-3x a day
  • Over time, the gel dries up and loses its effect. Applying it twice a day ensures continuous coverage

Who Should Use Mederma PM?

Mederma PM can be used on all types of scars, including:

  • Post-surgical scars
  • Burn marks
  • Acne scars
  • Keloid scars
  • Hypertrophic scars (often develop following burns)
  • Scars from trauma or injury
  • Scars from bruises, cuts, or scrapes

Please Note: Mederma should not be used on open wounds! For most injuries, you can use Mederma after the scab has fallen off. For surgical scars, you must wait until the stitches or staples are removed.

Mederma PM Ingredients

The key ingredients in Mederma include:

  1. Cepalin (Onion Extract)
  2. Copper Peptides
  3. Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E)
  4. Hydrolyzed Collagen

You can find the full ingredient list here.

We’ve analyzed the effectiveness of each ingredient for treating scars.

1. Cepalin (Onion Extract)

All Mederma products contain Cepalin (onion extract), an ingredient with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Research studies have shown that onion extract can soften existing scars and prevent new ones from forming.

Clinical studies, however, have been mixed. Early studies found no significant difference between onion extract and plain ol’ Vaseline.

Other studies found onion extract was effective for scars from laser tattoo removal. A third study showed onion extract was superior to a single corticosteroid injection.

A study by Draelos in 2012 showed positive results using onion extract (Mederma Advanced Scar Gel) on new surgical scars after 8 weeks.

Finally, onion extract contains quercetin, a plant flavonoid that may explain its anti-scarring properties. Research shows that quercetin inhibits collagen growth and softens raised scars.

Onion extract has shown mixed results among clinical studies.

2. Copper Peptides

Mederma PM includes copper peptides which research shows may promote wound healing. It’s thought that copper peptides can stimulate collagen production and increase extracellular matrix materials like glycosaminoglycans.

Copper peptides may improve wound healing.

3. Tocopherol Acetate (Vitamin E)

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects skin from pollution and environmental stressors.

It works to protect the body from free radical damage and premature signs of aging.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that fends off free radicals.

4. Hydrolyzed Collagen

Hydrolyzed collagen is essentially broken down pieces of longer-chain collagen molecules. These include collagen building blocks like glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.

It’s unclear how effective applying hydrolyzed collagen on the skin is for stimulating collagen production in the skin itself.

Hydrolyzed collagen includes the building blocks of collagen.

Mederma PM Reviews

Review by LaShenny21

"Works but results take time!"

"I tried another more expensive brand on my dark brown skin prior with no results so I was a little skeptical about trying this one.I have been using this product on a small burn scar (length of a dime) on my right arm for 2 months and have seen a drastic improvement. It is even working on a larger scar (size of a quarter) that I have on the same arm from years ago. You must follow the directions that come with this product to see results. Results do take time to become noticeable. I first started results after 3 weeks of use. The cream has a pleasant fragrance to it and provides the right amount of moisture."

"Scar is gone after 2 months of using Mederma!"

"I have been using these products since November (a bit more than 2 months in total), I have not skipped them once, sometimes using both just once in different moments of the day: Mederma PM before going to bed, while I use Mederma Advanced 1x when I'm at home in the morning or afternoon. I can say the scar is very, very hard to notice now. A person who has beel following its evolution only notices some minor pink pigmentation because he knows it was there, the rest simply do not see anything on the skin surface. For a period of time, people I interacted with used to look at my scar, probably wondering what had happened to my cheek. Fortuntately, this awkard feeling of people staring at the scar is gone. I am planning to continue using Mederma PM for many more months, essentially until I finish the tube. If this progress after 2 months is any indication, my relatives will hardly remember I had that reddish minor burn scar on my cheek at all. The brand asks to be patient and wait at least 4 months for new scars, and much longer for old scars. All I can say is that it has done a great job in 2 months, and it can only get slightly better from now on."

"Didn't work for my surgical scars"

"Merderma PM Intensive Overnight Scar Cream may work for some people. I had MOHS on my nose in Dec, 5 months ago. On a fresh scar (after it has healed closed) it is supposed to be applied for 8 weeks. I used it 14 weeks. I have very fair skin, I see no difference in the area where I put the cream and the areas where I didn't. The scar has disappeared on it's own on sides and top of nose where I did not put the cream. However in the area where skin was moved over to cover the surgery, and I did put the cream, I see no difference, skin is still red/purple, and in fact the cream irritates my skin and makes pimples. I have found the best remedy is time. A little patience and some Aquaphor. Also don't try to cover with foundation, it makes it look even worse. I feel this product was not useful for me."

How to Use Mederma PM

I recommend applying a thin layer twice a day and staying as consistent as you can with it.

Don’t rub the gel all over like a lotion! Rather, dab it onto your scar and wait until it’s fully absorbed. This ensures your scar receives all of the product and not the surrounding skin.

For some people, that could mean waiting up to 6 months or more before seeing any results. Keep a record of before and after photos to monitor your progress.

If you can’t wait that long, you may want to consider corticosteroid injections, a well-established method of flattening keloid and hypertrophic scars.

Make sure to use adequate sunscreen and sun protection during the day. Scars can be easily damaged and discolored by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.

Mederma PM Side Effects

Most people should not experience any side effects. However, some people may have allergies or skin reactions to the ingredients. Stop immediately and discontinue if this happens. You can contact the manufacturer for a full refund using this form.

Make sure to test for skin reactions by doing a patch test on your arm before using it on your face.
