Battling dry, irritated skin can be frustrating, especially during winter. As a skincare editor, two products I often recommend are Aquaphor Healing Ointment and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion. While both hydrate cracked skin, they have some key differences.

Ingredients

Aquaphor contains petroleum, mineral oil, and glycerin to deeply moisturize along with panthenol to soothe skin. Aveeno uses colloidal oatmeal plus ceramides to nourish and protect the skin barrier. While Aquaphor relies on occlusive emollients, Aveeno emphasizes natural, gentle ingredients.

Texture and Feel

With a thicker, more occlusive texture, Aquaphor provides a protective barrier while Aveeno has a creamier, lotion-like consistency. Aquaphor is more greasy but gives intense overnight hydration. Aveeno absorbs well for daytime use under makeup or sunscreen.

Effectiveness

In my experience, both excel at healing dry, cracked skin. However, Aquaphor’s ultra-nourishing balm texture gives it a slight edge for providing immediate, long-lasting relief to the driest areas, especially when used overnight.

Skin Type Suitability

Aquaphor works incredibly for severely dry, cracked skin in need of heavy-duty hydration. Aveeno’s gentler formula with colloidal oatmeal is ideal for sensitive, easily irritated skin prone to dryness and flaking.

Usage

Aquaphor can be used anywhere, including lips, hands, feet, and eczema patches. Aveeno works well on the body and limbs but is likely too rich for the acne-prone face. Aquaphor also excels as an overnight mask or spot treatment while Aveeno is better for daytime under makeup.

Price

Aquaphor costs around $4-12 USD for a 1-3 ounce tube or jar while Aveeno runs $5-12 USD for a larger 10-24 ounce bottle of lotion. So Aveeno provides more product overall for a similar price point.

Reviews

Both products earn outstanding reviews for treating extremely dry, cracked skin. Some do find Aquaphor too greasy for daytime facial use. Aveeno is appreciated as a gentler option for sensitive areas while still providing rich hydration.

The Bottom Line

Aquaphor and Aveeno take different but equally effective approaches to nourishing dry skin. I'd recommend rich Aquaphor to severely parched areas and gentle Aveeno for sensitive, irritated skin. But you can't go wrong picking either brand this winter when extra hydration is a must!
